The Federal Election Commission (FEC) was created to play the critical role of enforcing our federal campaign finance laws and preventing political corruption or the appearance of corruption. Its job is to investigate complaints and issue rulings or referrals about violations, and create new rules as needed.
Yet, since its creation, the agency has been largely dysfunctional and gridlocked — known for its inaction and ideological and partisan divides. And, for long periods of time during the 2020 election cycle, the nation’s campaign finance watchdog was essentially shut down due to the fact that it didn’t even have enough commissioners to perform some of its most basic duties.
In episode 27, Weston talks with the current chair and two former FEC commissioners to explore how the agency got to this place, and what can be done to help make the agency more functional and effective.
