Today, Issue One sent the following letter to all House offices urging them to vote in support of the bipartisan recommendations from the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress.
—
Earlier this week, Representatives Derek Kilmer (D-WA) and Tom Graves (R-GA) introduced a bipartisan resolution to create a more efficient and responsive House of Representatives. H.Res. 756, Moving Our Democracy and Congressional Operations Towards Modernizing Resolution, includes 29 recommendations made by the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress. Those recommendations seek to improve constituent engagement, staff retention and diversity, transparency, accessibility, and technology in the House.
All members of the Modernization Committee have co-sponsored H.Res.756.
Issue One strongly believes that the House should act swiftly to move this legislation before the House adjourns for the year.
H.Res. 756 is the product of groundbreaking bipartisan work by the Modernization and House Administration Committees. Supported by leadership from both parties, the Modernization Committee was established by a near-unanimous House vote in January 2019 and was recently extended for a second year. The Committee has held fourteen hearings to solicit input from dozens of Members and to examine a wide range of solutions to improve the first branch of government. Passing the Committee’s recommendations is a crucial first step in making Congress work better for the American people.
Should these provisions be brought to the floor before the House adjourns, Issue One strongly urges you to vote in support of the Modernization Committee’s recommendations.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
Sincerely,
Meredith McGehee
