This week, Issue One will join over 1,500 activists in Nashville, Tennessee at the 2019 Unrig Summit, a cross-partisan convening to fix America’s broken political system. The three-day conference from Friday, March 29 to Sunday, March 31 will include a series of panels, trainings, and activities with more than 140 speakers who will discuss strategies to unrig our nation’s politics. This will be the largest political reform convening for organizers, activists, elected leaders and others fighting for change.
On Saturday afternoon from 12:30 pm CT – 1:30 pm CT, Issue One’s Executive Director Meredith McGehee will moderate a panel with members of Congress called “Can Congress Fix Itself?” The session will consist of a bipartisan discussion featuring Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN), Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN), 2020 Democratic candidate for president Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), and Rep. John Sarbanes (D-MD), who will share their perspective on the opportunities and challenges of federal efforts to win sweeping reforms. McGehee will also teach a masterclass on lobbying, money in politics, and ethics reform.
“There is no doubt that political reform is at the top of the American agenda. That’s what makes this event so timely…The people who are attending the Unrig Summit want to be a part of fixing the system,” said McGehee.
Issue One ReFormers Caucus Co-chair Zach Wamp (R-TN), a former eight-term congressman, will share his insights on “How to Connect Across Ideology Differences,” discussing the need for building bipartisan alliances to win game-changing reforms.
Other sessions include How to Get Media Coverage, Grassroots Fundraising 101, Translating Vision to Action, Money in Politics, and more. These sessions will allow participants to build their skills as activists, learn how they can make an impact on policy solutions, and how they can be a part of a movement for change.
