In response to yesterday’s introduction of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in the Senate, Issue One’s Founder and CEO Nick Penniman released the following statement:

“We applaud the introduction of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in the Senate, where the Voting Rights Act has been reauthorized on five separate occasions by overwhelming majorities of Republicans and Democrats since its original passage in 1965. As they have already done in the past, it is now the Senate’s responsibility to again guarantee equal access to the ballot box in a bipartisan manner.

“The freedom to vote is a sacred tradition that must be protected. No matter your political ideology, ZIP code, skin color, or gender, we must ensure that every American has a voice in our democratic process.

“We strongly urge the Senate to pass this bill, just as the House of Representatives did earlier this year. We must seize this historic opportunity to build an inclusive democracy that works for everyone.”
