In response to President Trump firing of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Issue One Founder and CEO Nick Penniman provided the following statement:
“The scandal-plagued tenure of Kristi Noem was brought to an end on social media, but congressional oversight played a key role in her firing. President Trump stood by her through the tragedies of her overzealous and vicious immigration enforcement in American cities, but when Congress called her out over the seemingly endless abuses of her office, the President decided that he and the American people had seen enough.
“Former Secretary Noem is far from the only member of the president’s cabinet to abuse their office and their powers. Congress must continue to demand that administration officials answer for their failures and their abuses of power. Oversight hearings are vital to checking misuse and exploitation of government powers. And if it becomes necessary, Congress can and must use its power to impeach cabinet officials who go too far.
“When Congress does its job, the abuses of the Trump administration can be checked. Now is the time for Congress to fulfill its oversight duties without fear or favor no matter who is serving in the office of the president.”
