In response to death threats directed at ABC’s Rachel Scott for asking questions of Mr. Trump at the recent meeting of the National Association of Black Journalists, former Reps. Barbara Comstock (R-VA), Donna Edwards (D-MD), and Zach Wamp (R-TN), Co-Chairs of Issue One’s bipartisan National Council on Election Integrity, released the following statement:

“Our election season necessitates healthy debate and questioning of candidates without the prospect of death threats to journalists who participate in this process. An independent and inquiring press are essential in a thriving democracy.

“We know on January 6 and often at rallies, threats are directed at the press that go beyond merely expressing dislike. All political candidates should unambiguously state that death threats to reporters for doing their job are unacceptable and un-American. We call on the campaigns for president to do so immediately.”
