In response to today’s indictment of former President Donald Trump for his role in the effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election, including the events surrounding the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, Issue One CEO and Founder Nick Penniman released the following statement:
“Today’s historic indictment reinforces a central pillar of our democracy — no one, not even a former president, is above the law. Every person involved in the conspiracy to overturn the will of the people following the 2020 presidential election must be brought to justice, and that includes former President Trump.
“As last year’s bipartisan investigation by the January 6th Committee demonstrated, former President Trump intentionally spread lies about an election he lost. He placed a target on the backs of election officials and his own vice president, used social media to mobilize supporters and extremist groups, knowingly directed a heavily armed mob to the Capitol in an attempt to halt the peaceful transfer of power, and did nothing to stop the violent and deadly attack on our democracy as it unfolded in real time.
“The evidence available to us paints a compelling and disturbing picture of the former president’s criminal conspiracy to use violence and other means to hold onto power. It will now be up to a jury of his peers to decide whether former President Trump is guilty of these very serious charges.”
