In response to the bipartisan House passage of an Iran War Powers Resolution (H. Con. Res. 86) amid the highly unpopular war in Iran, Issue One Vice President of Advocacy Alix Fraser issued the following statement:

“Today’s vote is a huge win for the Constitution and for the American people. The House finally had the political willpower to stand up to the President’s unconstitutional war. Americans should celebrate this massive victory, but have every right to feel frustrated that it took this long for Congress to work on behalf of the people. That must change. Our democracy will not survive if Congress fails to uphold its responsibility to check executive power at this critical juncture.

“It took leadership in both political parties to make this happen—but it took a special type of courage from those Republican leaders who broke from party leadership to uphold our constitutional values. We applaud Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Tom Barrett (R-MI), and Warren Davidson (R-OH), who voted yes on this resolution, putting their country before their party.

“Now, the Senate must also vote yes on this resolution. While we have hope given the positive momentum they showed just before recess, we know this fight is far from over. Together with our partners, advocates, and allies, Issue One will continue to demand Congress uphold its constitutional authority and responsibility to the American people.”
