Issue One applauds bipartisan House passage of bill creating January 6th Commission; calls on Senate to act

Following today’s bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives to pass legislation that would create an independent January 6th Commission, Issue One CEO and Founder Nick Penniman and Executive Director Meredith McGehee issued the following statements:

Penniman said: “Our nation must never again witness such a reprehensible attack on our democracy as we saw on January 6th. Today’s passage of H.R. 3233 with strong Republican support is a pivotal step that puts country first. It is now time for the Senate to act. We urge members of both parties to set aside partisan politics, live up to the oath they swore to uphold when taking office, and do the right thing by passing legislation to establish an independent and bipartisan January 6th Commission.”

McGehee added: “We applaud today’s breakthrough bipartisan vote by the House to create an independent commission to investigate the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. Getting to this moment was not easy, and would not have been possible without the crucial bipartisan agreement between House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) and Ranking Member John Katko (R-NY). We thank them for their service and commitment to working together to uncover the truth that the American people deserve. We now call upon the Senate to take action and get this done.”

Providing further support to the bill that passed through the House today, Governor Tom Kean and Congressman Lee Hamilton, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the 9/11 Commission, issued a joint statement this morning calling on Republicans and Democrats in Congress to “come together as Americans in common pursuit of truth and justice.”

Yesterday, Issue One’s bipartisan National Council on Election Integrity also released a statement commending the House Rules Committee vote to advance this critical piece of legislation to the House floor.
