In response to the creation of a House select committee to investigate the January 6th assault on the U.S. Capitol, Issue One’s Founder and CEO Nick Penniman and Executive Director Meredith McGehee released the following statement:

“The January 6th attack on our U.S. Capitol remains a dark and deadly stain on our nation’s history, one that must be fully understood to ensure it never happens again.

“Today’s announcement by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi on the creation of a select committee in pursuit of the facts is an important step. We strongly urge members from both parties to work together in a bipartisan way to examine the events leading up to and during the attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power, and what we can do to prevent future violence and loss of life.

“We continue to support the establishment of an independent commission, modeled after the 9/11 Commission, which has already passed the House and earned bipartisan support in the Senate. An independent commission operating outside of Congress, which brings together all existing investigations—including the select committee’s findings—is the best vehicle to conduct a comprehensive and trusted investigation and produce recommendations to fully heal and protect our government.

“Gaining a full and objective understanding of what happened and why on January 6th should not be a partisan issue.

“Issue One applauds the Republicans and Democrats who have lived up to their oath of office to protect our democracy, and we will continue to work with those who share this commitment to the safety and prosperity of our country.”
