Issue One is pleased to announce Jamie Neikrie as its new Legislative Director. Neikrie, who previously served as Issue One’s legislative manager for tech reform, will be leading the organization’s crosspartisan legislative efforts following another historic election cycle that dramatically shifted the balance of power in the nation’s capital.

“As Issue One traverses a new chapter in our country’s history, Jamie is uniquely prepared to adapt and embrace the challenges and opportunities to come as we continue to bring together Democrats, Republicans, and independents in the movement to strengthen U.S. democracy. We look forward to all that Issue One can accomplish with Jamie leading our legislative strategy and advocacy,” said Issue One CEO Nick Penniman.

Since joining Issue One in 2021, Neikrie has played a key role in the advancement of numerous legislative priorities in support of the organization’s mission to fix our broken political system.

Following the establishment of the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress in 2019, and subsequent formation of the permanent bipartisan Subcommittee on Congressional Modernization, Neikrie worked with congressional members and advocates to make Congress a more functional, transparent, and representative institution. This included the advancement of key recommendations and new policies, including the creation of a pay floor in the House for congressional staffers following the release of Issue One’s Fair Pay report in 2022. The report, co-authored by Neikrie, revealed that roughly 13% of congressional staffers made less than a living wage in 2020, including 70% of staff assistants.

In 2022, Neikrie helped launch Issue One’s tech reform team, as well as the Council for Responsible Social Media. Since then, he has established himself as a leader in the tech reform movement, advancing policy to create an information ecosystem that enhances, rather than undermines, American democracy. He played a crucial role in the advancement of the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) — which passed in the Senate last year in a historic 91-3 vote — secured bipartisan support for the Platform Accountability and Transparency Act, and launched Issue One’s powerful database of Big Tech’s Broken Promises. Neikrie has also been featured in the Washington Post, Tech Policy Press, and regularly appears on Laura Coates’ SiriusXM program.

Prior to joining Issue One, Neikrie worked in the Massachusetts State House, where he helped organize the state’s first Citizen Initiative Review and authored legislation to create a state legislative research agency.

Issue One is the leading crosspartisan political reform group in Washington, D.C. We unite Republicans, Democrats, and independents in the movement to fix our broken political system, strengthen U.S. elections, address the harms that social media is having on our democracy, and limit the influence of big money over politics.
