Today, on this National Day of Mourning in remembrance of the life and legacy of former President Jimmy Carter, Issue One’s Founder and CEO Nick Penniman released the following statement:
“During his time as the 39th president of the United States, and in his decades of humanitarian work that followed, Jimmy Carter faithfully defended democracy at home and abroad. Carter was elected president at a time when the institution of the presidency itself was facing grave and serious challenges. From his humble roots as a peanut farmer to his commitment to social justice and human rights, he worked to restore faith in government. In the years following his departure from the Oval Office, he remained a compassionate and stoic advocate for peace, self-government, and human dignity — a mission that our friends at the Carter Center have adamantly and reliably advanced for more than 40 years. His example of working to defend democracy and alleviate human suffering is a gift that we will cherish and carry forward.”
