100 years ago this week, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote in our nation. Issue One Executive Director Meredith McGehee released the following statement:
“This is an important milestone in the ongoing effort to become a more perfect union. But, let’s be clear: almost as soon as the 19th Amendment was enacted, many states enacted barriers preventing women of color from using their new voting rights, rights they would not get back until the Voting Rights Act was passed more than four decades later.
Our nation continues to struggle to ensure that every American can be heard in the halls of power. It is the responsibility of us all to defend against attacks on voting — from whatever corner. It is at the heart of our national project. We at Issue One are committed to doing the work necessary to empower each and every American to fulfill their rights and responsibilities as citizens.”
