Today, Issue One honors the life and legacy of Sen. Alan Simpson (R-WY), a member of the bipartisan ReFormers Caucus who passed away on March 14, 2025 at the age of 93.

Amb. Tim Roemer (D-IN) and Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN), co-chairs of the ReFormers Caucus, remember Sen. Simpson’s impact and dedication to public service:

“Sen. Alan Simpson was a true statesman who believed in the power of common ground over partisan divides. With astute wit and unshakable integrity, he championed pragmatic solutions over rigid ideology, placing the good of the nation above partisan politics. Senator Simpson was always fun to work with at Issue One, as his quick wit and engaging humor sparkled and enhanced every conversation. At a time when bipartisanship feels increasingly rare, his legacy is a powerful reminder that principled leadership and a willingness to break with orthodoxy in pursuit of higher ideals are essential to a thriving republic.”

Sen. Simpson served in the United States Senate from 1979 to 1997 and would later co-chair the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform with Democrat Erskine Bowles. After he left Congress, Sen. Simpson continued to push for reforms to fix our broken campaign finance system, including advocating for public financing of campaigns and pushing for a constitutional amendment to combat the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling.
