In response to the news that the Senate parliamentarian ruled against Section 70302, a provision in the Reconciliation package (H.R.1) that would have significantly limited the enforcement capabilities of the judicial branch, Issue One Legislative Director Jamie Neikrie issued the following statement:
“The parliamentarian’s ruling barring Section 70302 from being included in the Reconciliation package is an example of American democracy functioning as the Founders intended. This wide-ranging and dangerous provision would have undermined our fundamental system of checks and balances, concentrating power in the executive branch and placing both Democratic and Republican presidents beyond accountability.”
“Senate Majority Leader John Thune has previously said ‘We’re not going there’ when it comes to overruling the parliamentarian on provisions in the Reconciliation package. We urge Majority Leader Thune to stand by his previous comments and the Senate to follow established rules, historical precedent, and the rule of law by adhering to the parliamentarian’s ruling.”
