Following today’s conviction of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) on 16 counts of bribery, extortion, and wire fraud, Issue One released the following statement from Amb. Tim Roemer (D-IN) and Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN), two former members of Congress and co-chairs of the bipartisan ReFormers Caucus:

“We commend the jury and members of law enforcement for performing their civic duties and exposing political corruption. No one is above the law, not even a United States senator. Today, justice has been served.

“Serving in Congress is an honor. It requires the highest ethical standards, and voters must be able to trust the leaders they elect. Sen. Menendez not only abused the public’s trust, but used his seat as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to serve as a foreign agent for another country.

“Sen. Menendez has lost the trust of the American people and his constituents in New Jersey, and he should step down immediately.”
