In response to today’s bipartisan report from the Senate Homeland Security and Rules committees on the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, Issue One’s Founder and CEO Nick Penniman and Executive Director Meredith McGehee released the following statement:
“Today’s bipartisan Senate report offers the public new, troubling details about the intelligence and security failures that contributed to one of the darkest days in our nation’s history.
“By illustrating critical breakdowns that could have prevented the violent assault on our democracy and tragic loss of life, this report makes bipartisan recommendations to ensure this never happens again. We applaud the Senate’s bipartisan work, but it is not enough.
“We need an independent and comprehensive investigation for our country to truly heal and learn from mistakes that were made leading up to and on that day. While there have been numerous reports and congressional investigations that have looked into certain aspects of the events of January 6th, no one has put all the puzzle pieces together. Putting these puzzle pieces together into a single narrative about what actually happened is exactly why an objective, independent January 6th Commission is needed.
“This kind of thorough and truthful account remains a crucial step that should unite all Americans and leaders from across the political spectrum. Defending the Constitution and protecting our government should not be a partisan issue. We call on Republicans and Democrats in the Senate to work together and swiftly pass legislation that will establish an independent and bipartisan January 6th Commission.”
