Nicole Lagace
Vice President, Communications
Nicole loves to simplify complex concepts through innovative communications products. With a deep understanding of strategic planning, team management, and creative problem-solving, Nicole has consistently driven results and strengthened organizational missions throughout her career in both the nonprofit and public sectors. At Issue One, Nicole oversees the organization’s communications strategy, ensuring alignment with the organization’s strategic objectives.
Prior to joining Issue One, Nicole served as the chief of information and senior advisor to former RI Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea where she spent seven years shaping how Rhode Islanders interact with their government. She spearheaded initiatives that enhanced transparency, modernized access through new and interactive digital tools, and created civic education resources, including the groundbreaking Open Government Center and nationally lauded Voter Information Center.
Prior to this role, Nicole served as the executive director at HousingWorks RI, where she significantly expanded the organization’s communications initiatives and public outreach. Through innovative products like infographics and issue briefs, Nicole simplified complex data analyses to empower advocates with essential information to push for increased public funding of affordable housing. This work directly contributed to the approval of a $25 million housing bond in 2014 and Nicole was invited to speak nationally to housing advocates about this success.
A lifelong New Englander, Nicole has a B.A. in journalism from St. Michael’s College in Vermont and currently lives in Providence, RI with her husband. Outside of work, Nicole loves hiking, photography, and is an avid musician. She and her husband recorded the theme song to Issue One’s Democracy Fix Podcast.
