Today the House voted to extend the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress through the end of the 116th Congress. Issue One Executive Director Meredith McGehee released the following statement:
“Issue One applauds the House for taking an important step forward today by extending the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress for another year. And we commend Speaker Pelosi and Minority Leader McCarthy for continuing to support this bipartisan endeavor, especially in a time of hyperpartisanship.
The challenge to this select committee remains clear: how to make the people’s chamber work better for the people. In its first year, the bipartisan committee undertook the important task of examining the root causes of institutional dysfunction and identified the first steps in repairing it.
With the unanimous support of its 12 Republican and Democratic members, the select committee has put forward more than two dozen recommendations that will make Congress a more effective body.
But there is much more work to be done.
That’s why last week Issue One joined with 24 groups from across the political spectrum to call on House leadership to extend this committee’s important work. And it’s why Issue One continues to urge the full House to act on the committee’s current recommendations before the end of this year.”
