WASHINGTON – Today, the Senate passed H. Con. Res 86, the Concurrent Iran War Powers Resolution introduced by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) and passed by the House with a vote of 215-208 on June 3, 2026. The Senate joined the House with a bipartisan vote of 50-48. Issue One Vice President of Advocacy Alix Fraser issued the following statement:
“The dam is breaking. Congress is finally taking their constitutional duty seriously. They are reasserting their authority and the power to send Americans to war is being taken back from an unchecked executive branch. It’s a long overdue assertion of power that Congress has relinquished to presidents of both parties.
“A critical mass of Republicans in both chambers — including Sens.Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Rand Paul (R-KY), and Susan Collins (R-ME) today — have decided enough is enough with war in Iran. We want to express our gratitude to them for being brave and putting the safety and security of the country first.
“We know this resolution is only symbolic, but we celebrate it nonetheless. We encourage Congress to advance a bipartisan joint resolution all the way to President Trump’s desk. Congress must be consistent in its commitment to advancing the Constitution and relentless in their momentum to reassert its authority. We deserve a future where each branch plays its unique constitutional role. Congress — not the executive — is the most powerful branch of our government, and it should act like it.”
