Following today’s House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology hearing to discuss the recent bipartisan proposal to sunset Section 230, Issue One CEO and Founder Nick Penniman issued the following statement:
“It’s encouraging to see growing bipartisan support in Congress for reforms that will begin exposing Big Tech — particularly social media companies — to commonsense regulations.
“Social media companies are the largest and most powerful media companies on Earth, yet they don’t have to play by the same rules as all other media companies do. It’s time to end their ‘Wild West’ era. No longer should these companies be allowed to operate with immunity from the same kinds of commonsense product liability and libel laws that so many other companies have to live by. We strongly encourage Congress to continue working together and update Section 230 so that the social media environment will still have all the protections of the First Amendment but become more responsible for what occurs on their sites.”
