WASHINGTON – In response to news last night that the President Trump has dismissed all remaining members of the Election Assistance Commission (EAC), thus rendering it unable to function just 116 days before Election Day, Issue One Director of Policy Michael McNulty issued the following statement:

“There should be no doubt in any American’s mind: the biggest threat to the integrity of the 2026 midterms is President Donald Trump. This is not a partisan message, simply a factual one. Our Constitution is clear that state and local bodies – not the president – run elections, and yet President Trump is doing everything within his power to sow mistrust and usurp the balance of power established by our Founding Fathers in the system of checks and balances and federalism that they created.

“Although the EAC doesn’t play a direct role in running elections, we must view this as part of a broader pattern of efforts to centralize control over election administration and tilt the playing field. President Trump is launching these attacks through every possible avenue: At the Supreme Court, he just gained expanded powers over independent agencies in Trump v. Slaughter; in Congress, the president is demanding to pass the unconscionable SAVE America Act by any means necessary; and in the media, he is sowing distrust in independent journalists reporting on election safety and security – even going so far as yelling at reporters and ending interviews. This is all a pattern directly out of an election takeover playbook, and it must be stopped by all Americans – Republicans and Democrats alike – for the sake of our nation.”
