Ahead of the first hearing of the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, Issue One ReFormers Caucus Co-chairs Amb. Tim Roemer (D-IN) and Zach Wamp (R-TN) issued the following statement:

“The law enforcement officers who protected the U.S. Capitol on January 6th are heroes. We are hopeful that the testimony presented by officers today will shed additional light on how a violent mob was able to breach the U.S. Capitol on January 6 and what their experiences were as law enforcement officers. This House Select Committee to Investigate January 6th offers an opportunity to build the record and pursue the facts of the events leading up to, and occurring on, that dark day. Every American — Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike — deserve answers about how the peaceful transfer of power was disrupted on January 6 and what steps can be taken to prevent such assaults from ever happening again.

“Issue One will continue to advocate for an independent, 9/11-style commission as the best way to uncover the truth. Congress has already demonstrated bipartisan support for such a commission, passing through the House by a vote of 252-175. But Senate Republicans have blocked bipartisan efforts to create this independent commission, where 60 votes are required to overcome parliamentary obstacles. We strongly urge the Senate to put country before party and bring this up for a second vote. Insulated from Congress and partisan politics, an objective, independent investigation into what happened on January 6 will fortify our democratic norms and institutions at this critical moment in history and will help our nation heal.”
