In response to White House Border Czar Tom Holman’s announcement this morning that Minnesota’s immigration enforcement surge is ending, Issue One Vice President of Advocacy Alix Fraser released the following statement:
“The administration’s backdown in Minnesota shows that the American people can still successfully pressure the federal government to bring about change. Now, members of Congress must listen to what their constituents are telling them and follow through to get militarized federal forces out of America’s cities.
“These agents are going somewhere when they leave Minnesota and their tactics will not change until Congress demands that they change. This drawdown is a reaction to public outrage over the senseless tragedies that have occurred in Minnesota and elsewhere that Americans have recorded.
“Those same Americans and hundreds of thousands more have successfully pressured Congress, resulting in Republicans calling Department of Homeland Security (DHS) oversight hearings, and at least in Minnesota, the administration changing course. But we have only won this battle, not the war. The American people must keep the pressure on Congress, and Congress in turn must extract real concessions and real reforms from the White House. It is clear that Congress must take back the powers it has ceded to the executive branch, and it must require greater executive branch transparency with stricter limits on when and how deployment of agents and troops can occur in America’s communities.
“These tragedies and these tactics will not end until Congress forces their end. Every American needs to call their representatives in Congress and demand accountability. This is not who we are as a nation. It must change. And the American people are demanding that change.”
