WASHINGTON (May 27, 2020) – The Fulcrum, a nonprofit news platform covering the democracy reform movement, announces today the addition of a new financial supporter, Craig Newmark Philanthropies.
The Fulcrum, which launched in June 2019, is staffed by award-winning journalists who report on the efforts to make our democratic republic less tribal, our elections more competitive, our politicians less beholden to moneyed interests, and our officials more attentive to real evidence in policy-making so Congress may become more effective, ethical and civil.
The Fulcrum is being incubated by Issue One, and while Issue One provides administration and fundraising support, The Fulcrum remains editorially independent.
Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, The Fulcrum’s reporting has honed in on the pandemic’s impact on elections and voters’ access to the ballot box. Craig Newmark Philanthropies’ contribution bolsters The Fulcrum’s coverage of this critical story, as the coronavirus causes upheaval in voting systems, the nation’s health and efforts to battle voter suppression.
“We are thrilled to welcome the support of Craig Newmark and his foundation,” said David Meyers, publisher and executive editor of The Fulcrum. “The American political system was already in need of repair before the coronavirus. But now the need for trustworthy journalism to cover voter protection efforts is greater than ever, and we are grateful to Craig for helping us fulfill that mission.”
“We all need to stand up to protect the country, and to that end, we need help from trustworthy news sources. The Fulcrum is an important part of that effort,” said Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist and Craig Newmark Philanthropies.
In conjunction with this gift, The Fulcrum us joining the American Press Institute’s Trusted Election Network, which works to dispel misinformation and share best practices for covering elections.
“At a time when Americans’ faith in our system has been shaken, it’s more critical than ever to have outlets like The Fulcrum providing reliable information about our democracy,” said Nick Penniman, Founder and CEO of Issue One. “Craig is a leading philanthropist in the journalism community. The Fulcrum is proud to be receiving his support.”
The Fulcrum is also generously supported by the Hewlett Foundation, the Bridge Alliance Education Fund, Arnold Ventures, Unite America Institute, the Gaia Fund and many individual donors.
