Reps. Bill Posey (R-FL) and Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) co-sponsor the Honest Ads Act

  • William Gray

This week, Reps. Bill Posey (R-FL) and Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) joined in co-sponsoring the Honest Ads Act, the best first step to secure our elections by preventing paid, foreign disinformation campaigns on the largest online platforms.

This brings the total number of sponsors in the House and Senate to 39 — 19 Republicans and 20 Democrats.

“The Honest Ads Act remains the most important bipartisan legislation to prevent foreign interference in our elections. Issue One is encouraged to see more Republicans and Democrats continue to work together to push for the bill,” said Issue One CEO Nick Penniman. “Securing our elections now transcends partisan politics. Every leader on Capitol Hill should now turn their attention to how best protect our political system ahead of 2020 and 2022.”

The new cosponsors come on the heels of news that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell supported the $250 million in additional funding to states for election security, following pressure from a growing number of groups from across the political spectrum that have been pushing Congress to stop foreign interference in our elections.

The Honest Ads Act is a key part of Issue One’s “Don’t Mess With US” project to stop foreign interference in our elections, and it is part of a suite of bills that Congress should act on now. Learn more at www.dontmesswithus.org
