In response to the Republican filibuster of the Freedom to Vote Act, Issue One CEO and Founder Nick Penniman issued the following statement:

“American democracy is under greater stress than anytime in our lifetimes. Congress, as the primary caretaker of our democracy, needs to act, just as a doctor needs to when confronted with a sick patient. The bill that was filibustered today in the Senate was a good-faith compromise led by Senator Joe Manchin. His door is wide open to Republicans or other Democrats who might want to amend the legislation. Shutting down debate entirely is irresponsible.

“We at Issue One have a proud track record of working closely with Republicans and Democrats on legislation. We also keep our finger on the pulse of public opinion, outside of the beltway. The Freedom To Vote Act includes common sense proposals that are supported by an overwhelming majority of voters on both sides of the aisle, including concrete steps to strengthen our elections, safeguard voting access, end partisan redistricting, and reduce the influence of money in our politics.

“It is not enough for Republicans to simply say no and walk away. It’s been far too long since Congress has made any meaningful upgrades to our democracy. The stakes are too high. Inaction will only lead to more breakdown of our democratic systems and institutions in the coming years.”
