In response to the letter from Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) sent to congressional leadership in both chambers urging Congress to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act, Issue One ReFormers Caucus Co-chairs Amb. Tim Roemer (D-IN) and Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN) released the following statement:

“We applaud Senator Manchin and Senator Murkowski for their leadership in working to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act. The act has long seen broad bipartisan support, and this time should be no different.

The freedom to vote is at the heart of the American experiment, and renewing the Voting Rights Act is critical to creating a more perfect union. Now more than ever, Congress must protect Americans’ access to the voting booth and ensure confidence in our electoral system.

As Senator Manchin and Senator Murkowski said, when it comes to reaffirming our bipartisan commitment to free, accessible, and secure elections for all, ‘[I]naction is not an option.’

Congress should seize on this bipartisan momentum and come together to agree on the details of what is being called the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.
