Issue One’s National Council on Election Integrity released the following statement in reaction to today’s bipartisan agreement on much-needed updates to the Electoral Count Act:

“Today’s breakthrough bipartisan agreement to update the antiquated Electoral Count Act (ECA) is a significant step forward that will help protect against a constitutional crisis following future presidential elections and help ensure the peaceful transfer of power, which has always been a hallmark of our democratic republic.

“Congress needs to get this done now before the next presidential election begins. As the bipartisan Senate working group has shown, there are some issues that rise above partisan politics. The current ECA no longer serves our democracy well, and these members have joined together to give it a much-needed update.

“We commend the senators involved for their leadership on this crucial issue. Updating the ECA now is necessary to protect future elections, and we look forward to supporting the ongoing discussions in both chambers to finalize the details to ensure Congress gets this done.”
