In response to tonight’s primetime January 6th Committee hearing, Issue One Founder and CEO Nick Penniman released the following statement:

“Over the course of eight public hearings, the January 6th Committee has demonstrated how close our country came to a full-blown constitutional crisis following the 2020 presidential election. It was a criminal conspiracy to use violence and other means to overturn the will of the people. Every person responsible for what happened that day must be brought to justice.

“As the hearings have shown, former President Trump intentionally spread disinformation about an election he lost, placed a target on the backs of election officials across the country, used social media to mobilize supporters and extremist groups, knowingly directed a heavily armed mob to the Capitol in an attempt to halt the peaceful transfer of power, and did nothing to stop the violent and deadly attack on our democracy as it unfolded in real time.

“The former president must be held accountable for his actions.

“Until we take bold and comprehensive action to strengthen the guardrails of our democracy, our nation will remain vulnerable to future attacks and our democracy will be at risk. Every American, regardless of political party, must unite to defend the Constitution, protect our elections, and preserve our experiment in self-government. This investigation has made it crystal clear that we all have a responsibility to our country to uphold the rule of law as well as the norms and behaviors that enable our democracy to persist.”
